Chapter 5

Jean and Tim couldn’t have been happier. School was going well, and marriage was going beautifully. They joined Jean’s church. She even had the boys baptized and dedicated their lives to God.

Over the next few months, she started singing on the choir again. She was grateful to know that Fred was no longer apart of the church. She had run into him at the supermarket. As she tried to avoid him, he walked straight toward her.

“Hey, my pretty girl. You are looking pretty as ever,” he said.

“Hey, Mr. Fred. It’s good to see you’re still alive and well.” Jean knew that her faith was being tested. Her skin crawled as he called her pretty girl. Jean excused herself. “I must go. Please tell Ms. Faith I said hello. Oh, since you were unapologetic about everything, I do forgive you. Not for you, but for me and my family.”

Fred’s mouth dropped as she walked off. Jean smiled to herself. She was proud and pleased with how she handled that. When she got home, she told Tim what had happened. He was furious, but he kept his composure for his wife’s sake. That may have been a demon she needed to fight herself. The man in him wanted to protect her, but the husband in him was proud of her. He thought about how much he loved that woman and about how there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to see her happy.

Tim had been noticing a change in Jean’s eating habits. She had even started getting a bit moody. There was a weight change, but he dared not tell her that. He prided himself in noticing the small things; her hair was growing, as were her fingernails. Tim often asked if she was feeling okay. Her answer was always the same.

Jean had started feeling a bit light headed with a little nausea but didn’t think anything of it. She attributed it to Tim’s cooking, although she would never tell him that. She loved the man, but cooking was not his strong suit. Who couldn’t cook rice or boil water? Tim, that’s who.

One day while leaving class, Jean passed out. The teacher immediately called an ambulance, while one of her classmates, whom Jean had become friends with, called Tim. He asked if she would ride with her to the hospital and said he would meet her there. Victoria, the classmate, rode with her, and assured Jean that Tim was on the way.

The paramedic asked her all kinds of questions, such as whether this had happened before and if she had any illnesses he needed to know about. Jean shook her head. She was too weak to speak.

As the paramedic took her vitals, he noticed an additional heartbeat. She hadn’t mentioned anything about the baby while he was questioning her. The paramedic decided to keep it to himself until she was stable, as he saw no need to agitate her further.

Tim arrived at the hospital, and the nurse showed him where his wife was.
